President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish two new public universities in the Bono East Region as part of efforts to expand access to higher education and drive regional development.

He made this known during his Bono East Thank-You Tour following the support he received in the December 2024 general elections. Speaking at a durbar of chiefs and people of the region at the College of Health in Kintampo, President Mahama said a Technical University would be built in Techiman, with land already secured at Forikrom, while a University of Health and Life Sciences would be established in Kintampo.

The President noted that education remained central to his vision for national development and pledged to prioritise infrastructure that enhances learning and skills training. He further disclosed that GHS 15 billion had been allocated for road infrastructure across the country, with Bono East benefiting from several key projects.

These include the Asuaye-Mesidan Road, Ofuman-Wenchi Road, Sunyani-Nkoranza Road, Techiman-Wenchi Road, Atebubu-Kajeji Road, and the Kintampo-Prang Road.

Mr Mahama said the road projects would support agricultural trade and reduce travel time and costs for residents and farmers.

He also revealed that the Department of Urban Roads has begun engineering designs for a 54-kilometre Outer Ring Road in Techiman, which is expected to divert heavy traffic from the town centre and improve safety.

He commended the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other drivers’ unions for reducing transport fares, describing it as a relief to many Ghanaians facing economic challenges.
