Mr. Vincent Antwi-Agyei, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has announced that the Assembly will begin a decongestion exercise in the Central Business District next week.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Mr. Antwi-Agyei said the exercise is necessary to improve pedestrian movement and reduce traffic congestion in the municipality. “There is a critical need to decongest the city to ensure the safety of pedestrians and allow free flow of traffic,” he stated.

He said a taskforce will begin enforcement from Sunday or Monday, and the exercise will be carried out in collaboration with traditional authorities, traders, market women, security services, and other key stakeholders.

Mr. Antwi-Agyei noted that many of Sunyani’s outer lanes have become inaccessible due to street trading, loading and offloading of goods, and the presence of unauthorized structures, which has resulted in increased traffic and safety risks.

The MCE stressed that the exercise is in line with the Assembly’s by-laws and warned that anyone who fails to comply will face legal action. “The Assembly is not out to collapse businesses, but rather to ensure public safety and restore order in the city,” he added.
