The Sunyani Municipal Assembly (SMA) has announced plans to begin a decongestion exercise within 14 days in the Central Business District (CBD) of Sunyani to improve traffic flow, restore order, and enhance public safety.
The Sunyani Municipal Assembly Chief Executive, Mr Vincent Antwi-Agyei, said the Assembly had engaged stakeholders, including market women, traders, and shop owners, ahead of the operation. A task force will be deployed to ensure compliance.
Speaking to the Sky News in Sunyani, Mr Antwi-Agyei advised traders and hawkers currently operating on streets and pedestrian walkways to vacate voluntarily and relocate to the designated market area before the deadline.

“This exercise is necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians, road users, and traders. The current situation poses risks to public health and safety, obstructs traffic, and undermines the orderly development of the city,” he stated.
He warned that food items exposed to direct sunlight on the streets were hazardous and called on traders to cease the practice.
Mr Antwi-Agyei added that while population and business growth in the municipality are welcome, they should not justify the unlawful occupation of roads and walkways.
On behalf of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, he urged the public to support the exercise and work with the Assembly to maintain cleanliness and order in the city.
